In Canada 2nd September, the day after Labor Day, marks back-to-school or La Rentrée as it is called in Québec. In Canada going to university is still referred to as 'attending school'. In light of this, I thought I'd share Canadian Google with you as it was particularly twee today!
I am taking four classes this semester, and I had all four of them today. I am incredibly excited about three of them and the fourth is neither here nor there - I have been promised I will be able to read and pronounce all of Beowulf by Christmas, that I will be using real Medieval manuscripts and that I will be introduced to Renaissance plays which will make me think twice about Shakespeare being my favourite playwright (a very brave thing to say . . .) My first week in the city hasn't been easy so it is nice to have had such a positive start to the academic year.
Between classes I popped in to the university museum and looked at dinosaur skeletons, shrunken heads, Samurai armour. How very cultured of me. I definitely need to go back for a more thorough look.
Here is a sneaky photo Helena snapped of me chilling with our Scottish pal James McGill who founded the university by generous bequest in 1821. I wish my coat flounced as his - perpetually - does.
Today was far from Scottish in temperature however; I was at class in bare legs and sandals (that has never happened in Edinburgh . . .) and the long walk uphill to the Education building in Montreal humidity was horrible. (According to Google it is currently 99% humidity and 20 degrees Celsius at almost midnight!) I'll be biting my tongue soon I'm sure - Winter is coming!
